Hilfswerk Indien Dr. Elisabeth Vomstein Schliengen-Mauchen e.V.

- Screening of school children for leprosy
Since 1961 Dr. Vomstein has been working in Settipatty in southern India treating persons afflicted with leprosy, most of whom have been ostracized by their families and communities and forced to lead a life of poverty and social isolation. Over the years, Dr. Vomstein succeeded in transforming a squalid encampment into a modern leprosy hospital with ancillary offices, workshops, and educational facilities. In 1995 Dr. Vomstein retired from her daily activities at the hospital, but continues to serve in an advisory role to Dr. Trichirapalli Muthuswani Chinnaiyan, who now heads the project initiated almost five decades ago.
The number of services offered by the hospital has expanded in recent years to include care for patients with malaria and tuberculosis, as well as orthopedic treatment for children disabled by polio. Today the relief organization is focusing its efforts on supporting mobile treatment facilities that provide care to leprosy patients living in remote areas.
The hospital is funded by the German Aussätzigenhilfswerk Würzburg, and by the Hilfswerk Indien Dr. Elisabeth Vomstein Schliengen-Mauchen e.V.
